“We have fond childhood memories of watching our grandmothers, mother, and aunts wearing sarees like it was their second skin. However, when we grew up, we saw sarees were slowly starting to become occasion-wear, or seen as apparel for the older generation. We knew this was not true. And to bridge the gap, we created sarees with a contemporary twist.” – said Sujata Biswas, Co-founder of Suta.
Driven by a commitment to preserve the rich traditions of Indian handlooms, Suta has emerged as a pioneering force in the Indian D2C fashion industry. The brand has remarkably changed the perception of sarees, transforming them from occasional attire to everyday fashion staples.

Meet the team: Suta

The name Suta is derived from the first two letters of the founders’ names, Su- Sujata and Ta-Taniya, which aptly means ‘thread.‘ It beautifully symbolises the nature of the craft they hold dear.
Originally from Kolkata, the sisters were always driven by their passion for varied forms of art and culture across India. Their journey began with a nostalgic reminiscence of a childhood game, where they would create and sell bags made out of handkerchiefs.
This simple yet imaginative experience planted the seeds for exploring their first love – the world of handlooms.
Both founders, who are engineering graduates, left their successful corporate careers to follow their calling. In 2016, Suta was born.
From the get-go, the brand had a unique vision of infusing the rich heritage of Indian handlooms with a contemporary touch.
“When we grew up and we were exploring our own fashion choices, we could think of nothing more powerful than a saree to express ourselves.”
With its commitment to innovation and quality, the brand has carved a distinct niche for itself in the Indian fashion space. The label has garnered the attention and admiration of the fashion world, with several celebrities like Madhuri Dixit, Vidya Balan, and Kangana Ranaut, being spotted wearing Suta’s exquisite designs.
“What began as a passion project to explore our creative curiosities and personal inspirations, has turned into a business that has generated about Rs 60 crore in revenue in nearly seven years and has created a “happy place” for over 170 full-time employees.”

Leveraging Shopify to Connect Directly With Customers
Sujata and Taniya chose Shopify to begin their e-commerce journey. According to the team, this decision was easy since Shopify not only saved server and development costs, but also gave them out-of-the-box features like abandoned cart recovery.
“One of the major benefits of using Shopify is that it is extremely easy to use and set up. Also, we love features like the abandoned checkout cart recovery service which automatically tracks and emails potential customers to remind them to complete their purchase, an easy way to generate more revenue. ”
Trusting Cashfree Payments With Payments
With their business expanding rapidly, Suta sought a payments partner that could handle their growing volume of transactions. They chose Cashfree Payments as their payments partner, because of the platform’s comprehensive capabilities.
Cashfree Payments not only helps Suta collect payments on Shopify but also effectively handles payouts and international payments for the brand.
When asked what’s best about working with Cashfree, Sujata highlighted how Cashfree helps them manage refunds for COD orders effortlessly.
