During the recent migration of our Cashgram project\u2019s framework from Sapper to SvelteKit, we used GitHub Copilot in agent mode to speed up what was originally a two-week-long effort.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, with AI\u2019s support and our engineers\u2019 expertise, we were able to complete the migration in less than <strong>two days.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Migrate_from_Sapper_to_SvelteKit\"><\/span>Why Migrate from Sapper to SvelteKit?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sapper, the original Svelte application framework, was officially deprecated in favour of SvelteKit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, SvelteKit offers several advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Better performance through Vite&#8217;s dev server<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved routing system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhanced SSR capabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better TypeScript support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Active maintenance and community support<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our_Approach\"><\/span>Our Approach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of spending days manually refactoring, we accelerated the process using <a href=\"https:\/\/github.blog\/news-insights\/product-news\/github-copilot-agent-mode-activated\/\">GitHub Copilot<\/a> in Agent mode. Here&#8217;s how we implemented it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clear Documentation Reference<\/strong>: We provided Copilot with the official migration guide from the Svelte documentation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Iterative Prompting:<\/strong> When Copilot&#8217;s first solutions weren&#8217;t perfect, we refined our prompts with more context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>File-by-File Migration<\/strong>: We tackled the migration file by file, starting with configuration files<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Migration_Wins\"><\/span>Key Migration Wins<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Purging_Unnecessary_Files_and_Folders\"><\/span>Purging Unnecessary Files and Folders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the initial tasks Copilot helped with was identifying and removing Sapper-specific files and folders that were no longer needed in <a href=\"https:\/\/kit.svelte.dev\/docs\/migrating\">SvelteKit<\/a>. This included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Removing Sapper-specific Server middleware<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eliminating Sapper manifest files<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleaning up deprecated template structures<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This cleanup phase was critical as it prevented confusion between old and new code patterns and reduced the potential for conflicts. Copilot effectively identified these obsolete elements and suggested appropriate removals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bundling_Migration_From_Rollup_to_Vite\"><\/span>Bundling Migration: From Rollup to Vite<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A significant part of the migration involved transitioning from Rollup (used by Sapper) to Vite (used by SvelteKit). This wasn&#8217;t simply a matter of renaming files but required fundamental changes to how the project was configured:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Converting `rollup.config.js` to `vite.config.js`<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Updating plugin configurations to their Vite equivalents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reconfiguring asset handling for Vite&#8217;s approach<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bundler change had cascading effects throughout the project, particularly with environment variables. Copilot excelled here by suggesting multiple approaches for environment variable handling. It explained the tradeoffs of each approach, helping me make informed decisions based on our specific project needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intelligent_File_Analysis\"><\/span>Intelligent File Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most impressive aspects of working with GitHub Copilot was its ability to autonomously analyse files and determine whether they needed changes or could remain as-is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agent would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify files that required no migration changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlight files needing significant restructuring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritise files with dependencies that need to be migrated first<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This autonomous categorisation saved significant time that would otherwise have been spent manually reviewing every file in the project. For larger codebases, this kind of intelligent triage becomes increasingly valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Routing_Changes\"><\/span>Routing Changes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SvelteKit uses a file-based routing system that differs from Sapper&#8217;s approach. The Copilot assisted in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Converting routes from `src\/routes` to the proper SvelteKit structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Updating all route parameters to use the SvelteKit syntax<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Addressing load function changes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Challenges_and_Limitations\"><\/span>Challenges and Limitations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GitHub Copilot wasn&#8217;t perfect. We encountered several situations where human intervention was necessary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Custom Configurations<\/strong>: Copilot sometimes misses project-specific configurations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Edge Cases<\/strong>: Some complex routing edge cases required manual fixes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environment Setup<\/strong>: Getting the .gitignore file properly updated for `.sveltekit` folders and other new artifacts required human experience<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Results_and_Lessons_Learned\"><\/span>Results and Lessons Learned<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of the second day, our application was fully migrated and working in the new SvelteKit environment. Some key lessons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI Augmentation Works<\/strong>: Most of the repetitive and mechanical migration work was handled by Copilot, while human effort was reserved for the nuanced, high-impact decisions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Context is King<\/strong>: The more context we provided to Copilot, the better its solutions became<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Human Verification Critical<\/strong>: We still needed to review all changes and occasionally fix edge cases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Migration Documentation Helps<\/strong>: Providing Copilot with official migration guides significantly improved results<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This migration is just the beginning.
