At launch, customers could add eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards to Apple Pay. Apple also named Cashfree among the payment service providers supporting acceptance in Indian merchant networks. Availability still depends on the customer’s card, device and the merchant’s payment setup.

For merchants, the question has changed from when will Apple Pay arrive? to where does it fit in our checkout? Indian businesses selling overseas have another use case: eligible international customers could already use Apple Pay through providers such as Cashfree before the domestic launch.

Apple Pay Is Now Available in India

For more than a decade, Apple Pay expanded across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and other markets, while India remained one of the few major economies without a domestic rollout. That changed on 30 September 2026.

Customers with eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa or Mastercard credit cards can add them to Apple Wallet. They can use Apple Pay at supported contactless terminals and for purchases in participating apps and websites. Apple says it is available on compatible iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch devices, with Mac support coming later. For an explanation of the in-store payment method, see how contactless payments work.

The rollout is card-based. Apple has not announced UPI support or a date for adding other Indian banks. Its current list of participating banks names Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards for India. A customer’s existing debit card or a credit card from another bank should not be assumed to work merely because the merchant accepts Apple Pay.

The bigger opportunity for merchants is the ability to offer a familiar, fast way to pay to eligible Apple users. It is worth measuring against the payment methods your customers already use, rather than assuming it will improve every checkout.

Cross-Border Apple Pay Is a Separate Use Case

Here’s the detail merchants often miss: Indian businesses serving overseas customers could accept eligible international Apple Pay payments through Cashfree before Apple Pay launched for domestic cardholders. If you sell to international customers, including NRIs paying with supported overseas cards, this is a distinct payment flow from an Indian customer using an eligible Axis Bank card.

Check your provider’s eligibility and activation steps for each flow. Cashfree’s international payment gateway covers international card acceptance and Apple Pay for eligible overseas buyers; domestic availability should be confirmed for your checkout configuration.

Also read: Apple Pay with Dynamic Currency Conversion: A Better Checkout for Global Customers

Apple Pay India: What Is Confirmed?

The launch is no longer a forecast. The useful distinctions now are card eligibility, where customers can pay and which features have not been announced.

Feature

Confirmed position as of October 2026

Launch date

Apple Pay launched in India on 30 September 2026.

Payment method

Eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards can be added to Apple Pay.

Where it works

Supported contactless terminals, participating apps and websites. Check its participating bank list for later issuer additions.

Who Stands to Benefit Most from Apple Pay?

Not every business will see the same impact. The biggest beneficiaries are likely to be merchants whose customers use eligible Apple devices and cards, or who frequently make card-based digital payments.

Apple Pay could be particularly relevant for businesses serving:

Premium D2C brands targeting mobile-first consumers.

Luxury retail and fashion brands where fewer checkout steps may help customers finish a purchase.

Travel and hospitality businesses, including airlines, hotels and premium experiences.

Subscription and SaaS businesses, where the exact payment flow depends on the provider’s support for recurring transactions.

Businesses with a large NRI or international customer base, where Apple Pay is already familiar.

Merchants selling higher-value products, where card users may value a quicker checkout.

The practical test is whether eligible customers see and use the option, and whether completed orders improve. Avoid claiming a conversion uplift without your own checkout data.

What If Most of Your Customers Already Use UPI?

For many Indian merchants, UPI payments remain central to checkout. Apple Pay currently adds a card-based option for eligible users; it does not require a business to change its UPI strategy.

Think of it this way:

UPI continues to serve customers who prefer bank-account payments.

Apple Pay serves customers with a compatible Apple device and eligible card.

Offering both gives customers a choice, provided the options are displayed clearly on a mobile-friendly checkout.

A strong UPI checkout remains essential. Apple’s wallet offers convenience to a narrower segment at the initial rollout, so judge its value using your own audience and payment mix.

Also read: How to Find and Fix Checkout Drop-offs on Your Indian D2C Store

How Merchants Can Enable and Evaluate Apple Pay

There are a few practical steps businesses can take now that the domestic service is live.

1. Check domestic and cross-border eligibility separately

Ask your payment provider whether Apple Pay is enabled for your Indian customers, which cards and integrations it supports, and whether you can also accept eligible international Apple Pay payments. This prevents an overseas-wallet feature from being mistaken for domestic acceptance.

2. Check your checkout integration

Cashfree says Apple Pay can appear on its hosted checkout. It also describes dashboard activation and domain verification for popup or inline integrations, plus options for custom integrations. Confirm the steps for your account before announcing availability to customers.

3. Keep the mobile checkout simple

Apple Pay is designed for fast payments on compatible devices. Faster page loads, fewer steps and responsive design help the wider checkout too. Use completed payments, not just button clicks, to judge the result.

4. Continue offering other payment methods

Customers without an eligible Axis Bank credit card or compatible Apple device still need alternatives. Keep UPI, cards, net banking, wallets and any relevant international options easy to find. Secure card tokenization can also make repeat card purchases more convenient, but it is a different experience from Apple Pay.

5. Monitor confirmed changes

Follow Apple’s participating bank list, your provider’s product updates and your own checkout data. That is more useful now than relying on pre-launch reports about banks or UPI integration.

For merchants already on Cashfree, review your payment-method settings and integration type. Cashfree’s payment-method setup guide shows where supported methods can be viewed or requested. Test the option on compatible devices and eligible cards before changing customer-facing messaging.

Also read: Apple Pay Is Now Available with Cashfree

The Bottom Line

Apple Pay is live in India, with Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards supported in the initial rollout. It gives eligible customers another way to pay at participating stores and online. UPI and the other payment methods your customers use still deserve a clear place in checkout.

If you serve overseas buyers, assess international Apple Pay acceptance separately. If you serve Indian cardholders, confirm domestic availability on your integration and test the actual purchase and reconciliation flow. Cashfree is among the providers Apple named for its Indian merchant rollout, and its merchant guidance explains the available checkout paths.

Want to offer Apple Pay at checkout?

Talk to our team about Apple Pay availability for your Cashfree integration, including domestic and international payments.
Talk to our team

FAQs

When did Apple Pay launch in India?

Apple Pay launched in India on 30 September 2026. At launch, eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards could be added to Apple Wallet for use at supported merchants.

Can Indian merchants accept Apple Pay now?

Yes, Apple Pay is available for participating domestic merchants and eligible cardholders. Indian businesses can also accept eligible cross-border Apple Pay payments through supported providers. Confirm the domestic and international settings for your specific payment integration.

Will Apple Pay support UPI in India?

Apple has not announced UPI support or a date for it. Its initial India rollout uses eligible credit cards, so merchants should continue supporting UPI independently.

Which banks support Apple Pay in India?

Apple’s participating bank list currently names Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards for India. Check the list for changes before adding other banks to your checkout guidance.

How can a customer use Apple Pay in India?

An eligible customer adds a supported card to Apple Wallet on a compatible device. They can then select Apple Pay in a participating app or website, or pay at a supported contactless terminal, and authenticate on the device.

How should merchants enable Apple Pay?

Check the payment provider’s support for your checkout type, request or enable the method where available, complete any domain verification required, and run a test transaction with an eligible card and compatible device. Cashfree describes separate paths for hosted, popup, inline and custom checkouts.

Will Apple Pay replace UPI?

Apple Pay is a card-based option for eligible Apple users in the current India rollout. UPI remains a separate payment method used by many Indian customers, so merchants should offer the options that fit their audience.

Is Apple Pay secure?

Apple says it uses a device-specific account number and a unique transaction code rather than sharing the card number with the merchant. Customers authorize a payment using Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode. Merchants still need to follow their normal payment and fraud controls.

Do businesses need to rebuild their checkout for Apple Pay?

It depends on their provider and integration. Cashfree says hosted checkout merchants can offer Apple Pay without a custom build, while popup and inline integrations need activation and domain verification. Confirm the process on your account and test it before launch.

Apple Pay launched in India on 30 September 2026, bringing card-based payments to stores, apps and websites.
