It is a regulatory requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SEBI mandates TPV for investment platforms and certain lending businesses like NBFC. The intent behind this is sound: regulators want certainty that money flowing into these accounts originates from a bank account that was verified and linked during the customer&#8217;s onboarding, and not from any other account the customer happens to use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given how exposed these sectors are to fraud and money laundering, is exactly why this requirement exists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_TPV_Actually_Does\"><\/span>What TPV Actually Does<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TPV  restricts a customer&#8217;s UPI payment to one specific, pre-registered bank account. The flow is simple in concept:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The merchant captures and registers the customer&#8217;s bank account during onboarding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The merchant passes those registered account details when creating the payment order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The customer is expected to select the same account in their UPI app at checkout.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the customer selects a different account, the transaction fails, but only after PIN entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sequencing, validation happening after PIN entry rather than before, is where the compliance requirement turns into a business problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrong_Account_Selection_Problem\"><\/span>Wrong Account Selection Problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cashfree.com\/blog\/top-upi-apps-in-india\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">UPI apps<\/mark><\/a> display every linked account on the payment screen with no indication of which one is actually permitted. A customer with two or three linked accounts has no way of knowing, at a glance, which one is registered with the merchant.
