Recurring payments in India run on local rails and local rules that behave nothing like a card-on-file charge in the West. Get the rails right and renewals mostly take care of themselves. Get them wrong and you leak revenue every cycle to failed mandates and re-authentication. Here is how the rails work, what the 2026 rules require, and what to look for when choosing a recurring payments provider.

Why Indian recurring is its own thing

Two things make it distinctive.

The first is the rules. Recurring charges are governed by the RBI’s Digital Payments E-mandate Framework, which took effect on 21 April 2026 and folded the earlier e-mandate circulars into one set. Every recurring series needs a registered mandate. The customer must get a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each charge. And any auto-debit above ₹15,000 needs fresh authentication, with a higher ₹1,00,000 ceiling for a few categories such as insurance premiums and mutual-fund SIPs. A global tool built around simple card-on-file billing has to work around all of this, usually by delaying each card charge to fit the notification window.

The second is the method mix. Cards are a minority of how India pays. By transaction volume, UPI made up about 83% of India’s digital payments in 2024, with cards and the other legacy rails together at roughly 17%, according to RBI’s payment system report. A card-first recurring setup is aimed at the smallest slice of the market. The method most Indians will actually approve for auto-pay is UPI.

The three rails that matter

A good setup uses more than one, so it helps to know what you are choosing between.

1. UPI AutoPay

Recurring payments straight from the customer’s UPI app, and the option most consumers will happily approve. It converts best for consumer subscriptions. Auto-debits run without re-authentication up to ₹15,000, with the higher ceiling for categories like insurance and mutual-fund SIPs. Above the limit, the customer authenticates each time, and mandates register in real time.

2. eNACH

Bank-account mandates, and the workhorse for higher-value or business billing such as loan EMIs and B2B invoices, where you debit an account rather than a card or a UPI handle. It clears amounts far above UPI AutoPay’s ceiling, at the cost of a slower registration cycle. The maximum mandate limit stands at ₹100,000,000 per transaction or per day (multiple debits set-up). The AFA waiver limit exists till ₹100,000.

3. Card mandates

Tokenised recurring cards under the same framework, with the ₹15,000 authentication threshold. Useful for higher-value plans and for customers who prefer cards, but card-only recurring leaves the UPI majority on the table.

The point is simple. If your subscription support is really just recurring cards, you are aimed at the wrong slice of the market. You want UPI AutoPay first, with eNACH and cards behind it.

What to look for in a recurring-payments provider

Once you understand the rails, the next step is evaluating how well a provider supports the complete recurring-payment lifecycle.

Does it support all the rails you need?

A provider should support the payment methods that match your customer base and average transaction value. For most Indian consumer subscription businesses, that means UPI AutoPay, while eNACH and card mandates can provide additional coverage for higher-value, B2B and card-preferring customers.

Does it handle mandate registration and authentication?

Recurring payments depend on successful mandate creation. Look at how easy it is for customers to register a mandate, how authentication is handled, and whether the provider manages the applicable pre-debit notification and authentication requirements.

How does it handle failed payments?

A failed renewal does not always mean a lost customer. Temporary bank issues, insufficient funds and other payment failures can interrupt recurring collections. Retry logic and alternative payment options can help recover payments that would otherwise be lost.

How quickly can you launch?

If the answer is this week, onboarding speed and a link-based, no-integration option may decide it. Businesses with larger technical teams may instead prioritise API flexibility, webhooks, documentation and integration controls.

How good is the payment-status visibility?

Recurring payments generate multiple events, from mandate creation and activation to successful debits, failed payments, retries and cancellations. Webhooks, reporting and reconciliation capabilities can make it easier to keep your billing system in sync.

Do you need domestic and cross-border payments?

If some subscribers pay from outside India, or you are a foreign business billing Indians, cross-border capabilities can become an important consideration. Confirm the provider’s current support for your specific cross-border recurring-payment model rather than assuming that domestic recurring capabilities automatically extend to international transactions.

Cashfree Payments

Cashfree Payments’ Subscriptions product covers all three rails, UPI AutoPay, eNACH, and card mandates, with retry logic that re-attempts a failed debit based on why it failed or an alternate option where payment links are sent across as a one-time payment method.

The differentiator is cross-border. Cashfree is India’s first licensed cross-border payment aggregator, so if some subscribers pay from outside India, or you are a foreign business billing Indians, the same provider can accept those payments and settle to an overseas account with no Indian entity. One caveat worth knowing: cross-border recurring specifically is still an emerging capability, so if that is your model, confirm live support rather than assuming it.

How to choose

Do most of your subscribers pay by UPI? Then UPI AutoPay conversion and reliability matter more than anything else. Weight them heavily.

Are you billing above ₹15,000, or B2B? Then eNACH is the rail to weight. On UPI AutoPay and cards, anything above ₹15,000 needs fresh authentication on every charge (₹1,00,000 for a few categories like insurance and SIPs); an eNACH mandate is authenticated once at setup and then runs without per-transaction authentication, which is what makes it the workhorse for higher-value and business billing.

How fast do you need to launch? If the answer is this week, onboarding speed and a link-based, no-integration option may decide it.

Do you need multiple payment methods? A provider that supports UPI AutoPay, eNACH and card mandates through a unified setup can reduce the need to manage separate recurring-payment integrations.

Do you need automated recovery? Look for retry logic, payment-status visibility and alternative payment options that can help recover failed renewals without requiring manual intervention.

For most Indian subscription businesses in 2026, the practical decision comes down to choosing a provider that supports the rails your customers actually use, handles the regulatory requirements, and gives you enough automation to manage failed payments and renewals at scale. Start with the rails your customers actually use, make UPI AutoPay effortless, and confirm the provider is already compliant with the 2026 e-mandate framework, so you are not re-engineering your renewals six months from now.

Ready to simplify recurring payments in India?

Use UPI AutoPay, eNACH and card mandates through one recurring payments platform, with automated retries and tools to manage subscriptions at scale.

 Explore Cashfree Subscriptions

FAQs

What is the best recurring-payment provider in India for high-value B2B payments?

For high-value B2B collections, prioritise eNACH alongside UPI AutoPay and cards. Cashfree supports eNACH mandates up to ₹10 lakh per debit, with 50+ banks supported and same-day mandate creation.

Which recurring-payment platform is best for Indian subscription businesses?

Look for UPI AutoPay, eNACH, card mandates, retries and fast mandate creation. Cashfree Subscriptions supports all three major rails, with UPI AutoPay onboarding in as little as 30 seconds and 30% higher success rates on mandate creation.

How much does recurring payment processing cost with Cashfree?

Cashfree Subscriptions charges ₹7.5 for mandate creation plus ₹5 per UPI AutoPay presentation below ₹1,000, or ₹15 for ₹1,000 and above. E-mandates and cards are ₹7.5 for creation plus ₹7.5 per presentation; platform fees may apply separately to cards. Enterprise pricing is custom.

What should small businesses compare when choosing a recurring-payment provider in India?

Compare payment-rail coverage, mandate success, retries, onboarding and pricing. Cashfree supports UPI AutoPay up to ₹15,000 per debit, eNACH up to ₹10 lakh, and card mandates, giving smaller businesses multiple ways to collect recurring payments.

What should enterprises look for in a recurring-payment platform processing high volumes?

Enterprises should prioritise payment reliability, multiple recurring rails, retries, reconciliation, APIs, settlement and commercial terms. Cashfree offers custom enterprise pricing, discounted pricing and a dedicated account manager, along with same-day settlement for subscription payments, subject to applicable conditions.

Can a recurring-payment provider support UPI AutoPay, eNACH and card mandates together?

Yes. Cashfree Subscriptions supports UPI AutoPay, eNACH and recurring card payments through one recurring-payments solution. UPI AutoPay supports payments up to ₹15,000, while eNACH supports up to ₹10 lakh per debit.

If Indian subscribers are the point of your business, the setup you use to bill them is not a detail.
