It shows up in the data, in the drop-off rates, in the gap between initiated and completed transactions. What’s been harder to solve is the recovery. An email a few hours later. A retargeting ad. A hope that the customer comes back on their own. The tools available for post-failure recovery have always been passive, built around the idea that you can recapture intent days later. Most of the time, you can’t. The window is much shorter than that.

What makes this harder to accept is what’s actually happening on the customer’s side. Most payment failures aren’t a customer changing their mind. They’re a customer who tried to pay, hit something they didn’t understand: an incorrect UPI PIN, a session that timed out, a card that got declined without explanation. They’re waiting for someone to tell them what happened. The intent is intact. The confusion isn’t. And in the gap between “payment failed” and “someone explains what to do next,” the transaction quietly dies.

Cashfree Resolve is built to close that gap.

The window most merchants don’t know they have

Here’s what happens when a payment fails today. The customer gets an error message. Sometimes the money appears to be in limbo, debited but not confirmed. They check their bank app. They message the merchant. They wait. If they’re persistent enough, they figure it out eventually.

The merchant, meanwhile, has no mechanism to do anything. The transaction is marked failed and the flow moves on.

What gets lost in that silence is a timing reality: an estimated 80 to 90 percent of payment failures are structurally solvable. Wrong PIN. Expired session. Incorrect card detail. Each of these has a fix, a simple one, that requires about 30 seconds to deliver. But that delivery has a window of roughly 10 minutes before the customer loses momentum, gets distracted, or buys from somewhere else.

Most of those 10-minute windows go unused.

Why silence is the default, and why it costs

The reason merchants haven’t solved this isn’t indifference. It’s infrastructure. Reaching a customer within 60 seconds of a failure, explaining the specific cause in plain language, and helping them complete the transaction requires three things working together: real-time failure-reason telemetry, the ability to initiate outbound contact instantly, and a conversation layer capable of diagnosing and resolving in under a minute.

Until recently, the only way to do this was a human call centre. Which works. Outbound calling has been the workhorse of Indian financial services conversion for decades. But the economics only make sense at high ticket sizes or with dedicated teams at scale. For transaction-level recovery across a merchant’s full customer base, human agents are too slow and too expensive to deploy.

AI voice changes that calculation. The cost per call has come down roughly an order of magnitude in two years. Multilingual quality across Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi is now good enough that customers complete conversations without asking to speak to a human. What was a channel reserved for large-ticket recovery is now viable for every failed transaction.

What Cashfree Resolve does

For merchants who enable it, Cashfree Resolve triggers an outbound AI voice call within 60 seconds of a payment failure. The agent identifies itself as calling from the merchant, references the specific transaction, explains the likely failure reason drawn from Cashfree’s failure-reason telemetry, and offers the customer a path to complete it: re-attempt, switch method, or receive a fresh payment link on WhatsApp.

The conversation is short. It doesn’t need to be anything else. The customer’s intent is intact. The only thing missing was the explanation and the next step.

What comes back to the merchant is a transaction that would otherwise have been written off, and a customer who got a resolution instead of silence.

This isn’t a persuasion product

One design call worth being explicit about: Cashfree Resolve contains no offers, no discounts, no incentive logic.

That’s a deliberate choice. A failed transaction is a high-intent moment. The customer was mid-purchase. They don’t need to be convinced to complete it. They need to know what went wrong and how to fix it. Adding an offer to that conversation doesn’t meaningfully improve conversion on an already-willing buyer. What it does is introduce a fraud vector: customers who learn they can trigger failures to capture discounts. We didn’t build that.

This is a clarity product. The job is to close a transaction that was already in progress. That job is different from cart abandonment recovery, which is a persuasion problem with different intent dynamics and different mechanics. Resolve is scoped specifically to failed transactions, and that scoping is what makes it clean.

For most merchants, the current state is binary: a payment either completes, or it doesn’t and you hope the customer tries again. Resolve adds a third option. An active, automated recovery that runs in the background on every failure, costs nothing when it doesn’t recover, and brings back revenue that was already within reach.

If that sounds like something worth exploring for your business, we’d love to walk you through it.

Let’s Talk

Every merchant knows payments fail.
