GST, or Goods and Service Tax, is a destination-based indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. It came into effect on July 1, 2017, and ever since, it has largely replaced many other indirect

taxes in India

, including excise duty, VAT, and services tax.

Simply put, it is a ‘one country, one tax’ rule with uniform rates across the country. It was implemented to simplify the country’s tax structure.

GSTIN Verification

Under the GST system, three taxes are applicable:

  • CGST: Tax that the Central Government collects on intra-state transactions.
  • SGST: Tax that the State Government collects on intra-state transactions.
  • IGST: Tax that the Central Government collects for inter-state transactions.

For intra-state sale transactions, two taxes are applicable, which are levied by Central and State Governments, respectively. For example, if the rate of tax for services is 18%, for intra-state sale of services, both CGST of 9% and SGST of 9% are applicable.

What is the

GST Identification Number

(GSTIN)/GST Number?

In India, the government assigns a unique 15-digit number based on the PAN (Permanent Account Number)

GST Identification Number

This GST number is provided along with the GST registration certificate, and allows a registered taxpayer to be tracked and verified.

A business may have multiple GSTINs as they may have a presence in multiple states or expand into other activities.

What is GST Verification? Why is GST Verification Important?

GSTIN is necessary for verifying the authenticity of a GST-registered taxpayer. In fact, historically, individuals have in the past manipulated the GST numbers (GSTIN) to avoid paying taxes.

Verifying GSTIN is required to ensure that the GST is paid to the appropriate people. If the vendor’s GSTIN is fake or unverified, you will lose the Input Tax Credit (ITC). Therefore, you must verify the GSTIN to be able to claim all your eligible ITC. It is also an opportunity to contribute to nation-building and establish a transparent tax system

The 15-digit GSTIN also reflects various aspects of the business. The first two digits, for example, represent the state code, that is the state in which the business is incorporated.

Similarly, the next ten digits of the number represent the PAN number of the registered business owner. The last three digits represent the number of registrations made by the business entity. Z is the default, and an alphabet or number for error detection.
