AI agents can now complete payments on Cashfree Hosted Checkout in fewer steps, with no change to merchant integrations.
Payment is where agents get stuck
AI agents can now shop for people in the browser. But the journey is slow, because websites were built for people, not agents. An agent has to read each page, work out what every button does, and act one step at a time.
Merchants are starting to fix this on their own websites by adopting WebMCP. But payment usually happens on a checkout page the merchant doesn’t build. When we spoke to more than 50 founders building AI agents, payment came up again and again as the step where agents stall.
Every extra step costs the agent tokens, and is another chance to stall or fill the wrong field. Agent pricing often scales with the tokens consumed, so a slow checkout makes every purchase more expensive for the user. And a payment that fails at the last step costs the merchant the sale.
Today, Cashfree Hosted Checkout becomes agent-ready. It isn’t a new checkout. It’s the same Hosted Checkout merchants already use, now with WebMCP support. Agents get a clear set of tools to read the order, find a payment method and show a UPI QR code for the user to pay, instead of decoding the page. Merchants don’t need to change a thing.
Cashfree is the first payments company in India to bring WebMCP to its checkout.

How it works
WebMCP is an emerging web standard that lets a page expose tools to browser agents. Instead of scraping the page and simulating clicks, an agent gets a list of actions it can take, each with a defined input schema, and calls them directly.
On a Cashfree checkout, agents can use these tools. They run in the user’s own checkout session, and each one does only what the page already does.
| Tool | What it does | Available on |
| get_checkout_summary | Returns the merchant name, currency, order amount, payable amount after offers, and applied and available offers | All checkout pages |
| list_payment_methods | Lists the payment methods enabled for the order and the tools that work for each | Main checkout page |
| open_payment_method | Opens a payment method, as a click would | Main checkout page |
| back_to_payment_methods | Returns to the main checkout page | Payment method pages |
| show_upi_qr | Shows a UPI QR code for the payable amount. Marked as consequential | Main checkout page, when the UPI QR box appears |
| get_payment_status | Returns the payment status: not started, pending, failed or success | All checkout pages |
The tool list changes as checkout moves between pages, so agents should read the live tools rather than hard-code them. Full guidance is in the developer docs.
Here’s how a UPI QR payment works with an agent:
- The agent reads the order: the merchant, the order amount and the payable amount after offers.
- It lists the payment methods available for the order and the tools that work for each.
- It can ask the user to confirm before it starts the payment step.
- It shows the UPI QR code on the checkout page.
- The user scans it with any UPI app and approves with their UPI PIN.
- The agent checks the payment status. Checkout moves to the confirmation page as usual.
For other payment methods, the agent can find and open them, and the user completes the payment on the page.
What it means for agents
Fewer tokens per purchase. WebMCP can cut the tokens an agent needs to complete a checkout by more than 40%. That lowers the cost of every purchase an agent makes, and keeps agent shopping affordable for users.
Fewer stalls at the last step. With a defined path to pay, an agent is less likely to get stuck, fill the wrong field or hand the task back.
One pattern, many merchants. Every Cashfree Hosted Checkout page exposes the same kind of tools, so an agent that pays on one can pay for every merchant on Hosted Checkout.
A trusted route to pay. Agents complete payments through the checkout of an RBI-licensed payment aggregator.
What it means for merchants
A growing share of shoppers will arrive at checkout through an agent, and people who start shopping through agents tend to keep doing it. An agent-ready Hosted Checkout helps merchants collect more of those orders.
- More agent orders get completed. Agents reach payment in fewer steps, so fewer agent-led orders are abandoned.
- Agent payments are visible. The browser marks actions taken through Cashfree’s WebMCP tools as agent actions, so merchants can tell agent-assisted payments apart from direct ones.
- Same reconciliation. Agent-assisted payments are standard checkout payments. Merchants confirm them the same way as any other payment, through the Get Order API or payment webhooks.
Faster for agents, still in the user’s hands
An agent that pays for someone only works if that person can trust it. So two things don’t change.
The user approves every payment. No tool moves money on its own. The agent can show a UPI QR code, but only the user can scan it and approve with their UPI PIN. Tools never accept card numbers, CVV or OTPs.
Same checks as every payment. The tools run on the same checkout code, so offers, fraud, and risk checks work exactly as they do when a shopper pays.
