Being a problem-solver is one of the first signs of a passionate engineer and that’s exactly what has always drawn Shimil Jas, our Mobile Engineer 3, to the world of technology and AI. Fascinated by how small innovations can create large-scale impact, he thrives in environments where ideas move fast, and engineers take ownership beyond just writing code.
When he joined Cashfree Payments as Mobile Engineer-2 around three years ago, he quickly made a mark by working on merchant-facing solutions, leading the development of the mobile app from scratch, and enhancing the merchant dashboard.
One of his standout contributions? Cashfree Payments Handles—a seamless payments feature now used by thousands of merchants. From ideation to launch, Shimil worked across teams, turning an ambitious idea into a fintech staple.
In this edition of Career Compass, we dive into Shimil’s story of taking ownership, scaling innovation, and making a mark in fintech at Cashfree Payments.
Impact-Driven Engineering Excellence
When a team member is trusted with their ideas and works in a collaborative environment, they approach problems as their own, leading to stronger, more effective solutions for our customers. This blend of ownership, innovation, and teamwork is the essence of our culture of technical excellence at Cashfree Payments.
The Ideas Board is a great example of this culture—ideas can come from anywhere, and the best ones get the necessary support and resources to become reality, says Shimil.
The Ideas Board is a free-flowing, weekly idea-sharing forum that enables engineers to propose solutions, receive feedback, and bring their ideas to life with cross-functional collaboration.
The idea for Payment Handles came from a simple observation—merchants needed a more user-friendly and brand-driven way to share payment links. We saw the opportunity to provide a customisable, easy-to-share link that could improve the payment experience, he shares
By allowing merchants to put their brand identity directly into their payment links, it enhances customer recall and trust, making transactions feel more seamless and professional. This also improves the payment experience by reducing friction—merchants can instantly share links via WhatsApp, SMS, or social media, eliminating extra steps for customers.
Working on this project taught me how small ideas can turn into big, impactful features. What started as a simple concept is now being used by thousands of merchants.
Shimil also credits the success of the feature to Cashfree’s culture of collaboration and mentorship. “This was a true cross-team effort, made possible by the guidance of key leaders,” he says. His list of shout-outs to his teammates is long! Starting from our CTO Ramkumar Venkatesan, to his manager Subramanian K, and Raj Nandan Sharma (AD- Engineering) for their insights. He also acknowledges Renu Bisht, Vijay Donkena from the frontend team, Ajeet Kumar Mehta, Venkatanaga Sudheer Kumar from PG team, Rini Rafi from product marketing, and Manas Manohar from the design team for their exceptional development support in bringing the vision to life.
A Culture of Learning Led Growth
For Shimil, one of the most exciting aspects of working at Cashfree is the absence of rigid hierarchies, where engineers play an active role in technical and product discussions.
We are encouraged to challenge assumptions, bring new ideas to the table, and experiment with different approaches.
This learning-first mindset, paired with mentorship from senior engineers, has been instrumental in Shimil’s growth. In his nearly three years here, he has progressed to leading both mobile and web engineering teams.
Beyond professional growth, Shimil values the freedom to explore his passions—whether it’s contributing to open-source projects, expanding beyond his core role, or balancing work with personal interests.
Cashfree Payments provides the flexibility to work on what excites you. We’re encouraged to present ideas, experiment, and contribute beyond our regular work, which accelerates our growth.
Looking ahead, he aspires to build and own a product within Cashfree Payments—one that directly drives revenue growth and long-term success.
I want to create something impactful, a product that not only strengthens our offerings but also contributes meaningfully to the company’s growth.
