Welcome to part 3 of our series #MyCashienStory. These are stories and candid conversations highlighting unique experiences on becoming a ‘Cashien’.

Here’s Sushmita Ray, Assistant Manager, Legal at Cashfree Payments who joined us last year.

She shares about her career in the Legal team, becoming a Cashien and the learnings she gained down the line.

Tell us how you started on this path. How did you develop an interest in building a career in law?

I graduated from KIIT School of Law, KIIT (Deemed to be) University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where I completed a 5-year Dual Degree Integrated Course, B.Sc. LL.B (Intellectual Property Laws Hons.). During my college days, I was inclined towards developing a career in the field of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), specifically in patents. So, I pursued a degree in Science and Law followed by multiple internships in reputed IPR law firms. Yes, that was the original plan!

But then, by the end of my final year, I realised that fintech could be my next path. With the Digital India Programme, a plethora of opportunities in the domain and a booming economy, fintech was making headlines everywhere. So, during my campus placements, I appeared for an interview with a leading payments solution company. As my luck would have it, I ended up in the fintech industry.

After gaining an enriched work experience of more than 2 years, I decided to look for better professional opportunities and new challenges at work. That is when Cashfree Payments happened for me!

What are some of your usual tasks and responsibilities?

In my first month, I was focused on learning and understanding the company, along with the best practices that we follow. I understood that as a company, we are process-oriented and align our usual tasks to larger organisational OKRs.

As the days flew by, my daily tasks gained structure, and priority. Now, I take on multiple tasks including working on Intellectual Property & Contract Management, Product Contracts, Cross – Border Payments, New Initiatives, Banking Product, Strategic Products, Subsidiary Company Contracts, Inbound, Partnerships, Emerging Business, Marketing & Corporate Communications, Verification Suite & Subscriptions, Legal/Product/Regulatory Compliance and Advisory followed by handling few Disputes and Litigations, etc.

What are some skills that one needs as a corporate lawyer?

Regarding a career in Corporate Law, the top few skills in demand are: business ethics, business awareness, negotiation skills, communication, command on contracts, competition and corporate law, contract drafting and reviewing skills, and organisational & time management.

What is your mantra when it comes to work? What is it like working at Cashfree Payments?

Talking about my experience so far working with a team, my priority is to contribute to the team’s success and make sure everyone achieves their objectives. I do that best by listening to what the team leader requires and doing my part to the best of my ability. When I work with a team member on a project, I focus on working closely with others. I find that working collaboratively, from start to finish, means that both people are equally invested.

I would like to extend a special thanks to all the Cashiens who have immensely contributed to helping the organisation build & sustain its wonderful culture and made it a great place to work.

It is just the start for me here at Cashfree Payments. Based on my experience so far, I look forward to a fruitful and rewarding journey ahead. It’s a great experience to be called a #Cashien.

What are some of your hobbies and interests, outside of work?

To name a few, reading personality development books and writing as well as managing academic blogs keep me busy. You can find some of my articles here

I’m also into adventurous sports like go-karting, and activities like hiking, climbing, trekking, camping and likewise. I love to travel, learn new things, meet new people and build connections. I have already covered almost every state of India!
