Now, the Electronic Signature Service Provider (ESP) comes into the picture. ESP is a trusted third-party organisation endorsed by the Apex Regulator, the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under India’s Information Technology Act. Through the ESP, two major steps of eSign with Aadhaar are carried out – authentication followed by the signature. The UIDAI acts as an eKYC service and does the Aadhaar authentication. 

Once the authentication is successful,  ESP facilitates an eSign transaction between the signer and the Certifying Authority. This is the step when a key pair is generated and a signing request is created. This is followed by a Digital Signature Certificate obtained by the Certifying Authority. Then the signature is sent to the signer via the ASP and it’s done!

There are about 18 eSign Service Providers in India today including eMudhra, Protean NSDL e-gov and CDAC, as per the regulatory framework.
