Key Takeaways

  • WhatsApp Pay is the UPI feature used for personal transfers, while businesses generally collect through payment links or the WhatsApp Business Platform.
  • Businesses can accept payments on WhatsApp through an interactive payment link, UPI checkout inside the chat or a supported full payment gateway checkout.
  • UPI checkout supports UPI only. A full gateway checkout can support cards, net banking and wallets when the provider and WhatsApp integration allow them.
  • The announced UPI MDR framework proposes a 0.4% charge on eligible merchant payments above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300. NPCI has postponed implementation until after Diwali, and the revised effective date has not yet been confirmed.
  • WhatsApp Business messaging charges are separate from payment-processing fees and depend on the message category, customer location and timing.

A customer messages your business on WhatsApp, likes a product in your catalogue and wants to buy it. But how do they pay immediately? If you send a UPI ID and ask for a screenshot, the customer must switch apps, complete the payment and return to the chat. Your team must then verify the transaction manually.

A separate checkout page can add more steps, while an unclear status can create confusion or lead to an online payment failure. Accepting payments through WhatsApp reduces this friction and helps connect the payment with the order.

However, “WhatsApp Pay” can refer to two different experiences. Understanding that distinction is the first step in choosing the right setup.

What Is WhatsApp Pay and How Do WhatsApp Payments Work?

WhatsApp Pay is the UPI payment feature built into WhatsApp for sending and receiving money between supported bank accounts. Users link their bank account once and approve each transfer with their UPI PIN. The feature runs on BHIM UPI, and WhatsApp’s payment partners process the transfer in India. WhatsApp states that it does not charge users for these personal payments.

Business checkout is different. A company can use payment links or the WhatsApp Business Platform to send an order or payment request inside a customer conversation. Depending on the setup, the customer may pay using UPI, cards, net banking or wallets.

This matters operationally. A personal UPI receipt does not automatically provide order-level tracking, centralised refunds or structured reconciliation. A business payment setup connects the payment with an order reference and recorded status.

Three Ways Businesses Can Accept Payments on WhatsApp

The three main options differ in setup effort, supported payment methods and how closely the payment is connected with the WhatsApp conversation.

1. Send WhatsApp Payment Links

Payment links are the simplest option for social sellers, freelancers, service providers and businesses that collect against an invoice. You create a request for the required amount and send it to the customer’s WhatsApp number.

With Cashfree WhatsApp Payment Links, the request appears as an interactive card showing the business name, payment amount and a Pay Now button rather than as an unfamiliar raw URL. Customers can choose from the payment methods enabled for the link.

This option does not require a chatbot or WhatsApp Business API integration. It suits teams that already discuss orders with customers over chat.

2. Offer UPI Checkout Inside the Chat

With this option, a business sends an order_details message containing the products, quantities, prices, tax, shipping and discounts. When the customer taps Pay Now, they can choose WhatsApp or another available UPI app to approve the payment.

The setup requires the WhatsApp Business Platform and a gateway that supports UPI Intent. Customers can pay only through UPI in this flow. Businesses comparing the underlying collection method can review how a UPI payment gateway handles intent-based payments.

The payment gateway, not WhatsApp, sends the final transaction-status update for this option. Your system should therefore rely on the gateway’s webhook or status API before marking the order as paid.

3. Use Full Payment Gateway Checkout Inside WhatsApp

In a full gateway checkout, the business links a supported payment gateway account to its WhatsApp Business account. Customers can then access payment methods such as UPI, cards, net banking and wallets, depending on the provider and configuration.

For this flow, WhatsApp can send the business a payment-status webhook, and the integration may also support refunds through Meta’s Payments API. Because Meta’s supported providers and requirements can change, verify the current list in the official Payments API documentation instead of hard-coding a fixed number of gateways into the article.

Both in-chat API options generally require an eligible and verified business setup on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

WhatsApp Payment Charges for Businesses

The total cost can contain two components:

  • the payment-processing fee charged for the selected payment method
  • the WhatsApp Business messaging fee for chargeable template messages

These should not be combined into a single “WhatsApp Pay fee” because they come from different services.

Announced UPI MDR Framework for Merchant Payments

The Ministry of Finance announced the following MDR structure for selected UPI merchant payments:

  • Payments up to ₹2,000: No MDR.
  • Eligible merchant payments above ₹2,000: 0.4% MDR.
  • Payments of ₹75,000 and above: MDR capped at ₹300 per payment.
  • Railways, telecommunications, insurance, fuel and agricultural inputs: Flat ₹5 for eligible payments above ₹2,000.
  • Mutual funds and securities: 0.02%, capped at ₹300.
  • Eligible small merchants in the P2PM category: Zero MDR when monthly UPI QR receipts remain within ₹1 lakh.

The Ministry of Finance announcement also states that MDR is a merchant-side payment ecosystem charge and should not be passed on to customers.

UPI MDR Rollout Postponed Beyond Diwali

NPCI has postponed the UPI MDR rollout that was scheduled post Diwali. The announced fee structure remains unchanged, but implementation will begin only after Diwali on a date to be notified separately. Until NPCI confirms the revised date, businesses should not treat post Diwali as the effective date.

If the framework takes effect as announced, the calculation would look like this:

Customer paymentIllustrative MDR
₹1,500₹0
₹3,000₹12
₹10,000₹40
₹1,00,000₹300, subject to the cap and applicable category

For broader context on limits and category-specific thresholds, see the guide to UPI transaction limits.

Gateway Fees for Cards, Net Banking and Wallets

For cards, net banking or wallets, the gateway applies the fee agreed for that payment method and merchant account. Compare the complete pricing schedule rather than assuming every method has the same rate.

WhatsApp Business Messaging Charges

Meta charges businesses for delivered, chargeable template messages. Rates depend on the category and customer’s country. Regular service replies during the 24-hour customer service window are free, and qualifying utility messages in that window may also be free.

Payment-processing fees still apply independently. A free service message does not make the underlying payment transaction free.

How to Set Up WhatsApp Payments for a Business

The setup depends on whether you want to send payment links or build an in-chat API checkout.

  1. Choose the payment experience. Use payment links for a quick no-code setup. Choose an API-based flow when orders are created through a chatbot, CRM or automated WhatsApp journey.
  2. Open a payment account. For UPI checkout, confirm that the provider supports UPI Intent. For a full gateway flow, confirm that the provider is currently supported by Meta.
  3. Complete business verification. API-based in-chat payments generally require an eligible WhatsApp Business account, verified business information and visible customer-support details.
  4. Create the payment configuration. For UPI, this can include the merchant VPA, merchant category code and required payment details. If unfamiliar with the identifier, see what VPA means in UPI.
  5. Send an order or payment request. Include an unambiguous amount, description and unique order reference.
  6. Verify the final payment status. Do not treat a button tap or customer screenshot as payment confirmation. Use the gateway webhook or transaction-status API.
  7. Send order updates. Keep the customer informed when the order is confirmed, processing, shipped, completed or refunded.
  8. Reconcile by order reference. Match the WhatsApp order reference with the gateway order ID, payment ID, settlement report and bank credit.

Businesses without a website can use payment links, forms or QR codes, depending on how customers place orders.

How Cashfree Supports Payments on WhatsApp

Cashfree provides options for businesses that want a no-code payment request as well as teams building a UPI checkout into a WhatsApp bot.

WhatsApp Payment Links

Businesses can create a request through Cashfree Payment Links, select WhatsApp as the delivery channel and enter the customer’s number. The customer receives an interactive payment card with the amount, business identity and Pay Now action.

The payment-link flow can support:

  • UPI, cards, net banking and wallets based on the merchant configuration
  • payment tracking from a central dashboard
  • automated reminders for unpaid requests
  • link expiry and identifiable payment descriptions

Businesses that need structured data collection with the payment can also evaluate Payment Forms, while physical or assisted collection use cases may be better suited to a business UPI QR code.

In-Chat UPI Checkout for WhatsApp Bots

For a chatbot running on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the payment flow can work as follows:

  1. The business system creates an order through Cashfree.
  2. Cashfree returns the required UPI payment details.
  3. WhatsApp displays a Pay button in the order message.
  4. The customer approves the transaction through a UPI app.
  5. Cashfree’s webhook confirms the final payment status.

The integration should handle expired or cancelled orders, duplicate callbacks and late payments. Developers can review the WhatsApp Payment Links documentation for the no-code flow and the applicable Cashfree APIs for an automated implementation.

Cashfree’s Current Payment Gateway Offer

Eligible new merchants who complete onboarding during the offer period can receive a 0% payment gateway platform fee on their first ₹20 lakh in sales, with next-day settlement under the campaign. The offer is listed as valid until 31 March 2027, subject to its terms and eligibility. Review the latest Cashfree payment gateway pricing before publishing.

The offer applies to Cashfree’s broader online payment gateway, not specifically to Meta’s messaging charges or every external fee connected with WhatsApp.

Choosing the Right WhatsApp Payment Setup

Use payment links when your team manually discusses orders in WhatsApp and needs the fastest setup without building a bot. Use UPI checkout when the entire order journey is automated in chat and UPI is sufficient. Consider a supported full gateway integration when customers need multiple payment methods within the conversation and your business can maintain the required APIs, webhooks and reconciliation logic.

Choose the option your team can operate reliably, reconcile correctly and support when a payment fails or a customer requests a refund.

FAQs About WhatsApp Payments

1. What are WhatsApp Payments?

WhatsApp Payments is the UPI-based feature that allows supported users in India to send or receive money through WhatsApp. Businesses can separately accept payments through payment links or payment integrations on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

2. Can businesses accept payments through WhatsApp?

Yes. A business can send a payment link through WhatsApp or use an eligible WhatsApp Business Platform integration to present an order and payment option inside the chat.

3. How can a small business accept WhatsApp payments?

The simplest method is to create a payment link and send it as an interactive request. This does not require a website or chatbot. API-based in-chat checkout requires additional verification and integration.

4. How does a customer pay through WhatsApp?

For a personal transfer, the user opens a chat, selects the payment option, enters the amount and approves it with a UPI PIN. For a business order, the customer taps the Pay Now action in the payment request and chooses an available payment method.

5. What is the WhatsApp Pay limit in India?

The applicable limit depends on the bank, UPI app and transaction category. Regular UPI transfers are generally limited to ₹1 lakh, while selected verified merchant categories may support higher limits. The customer’s bank may impose a lower daily or transaction limit.

6. Does WhatsApp charge businesses for accepting payments?

WhatsApp Business messaging charges and payment-processing fees are separate. Meta may charge for delivered template messages, while the gateway, bank or payment ecosystem applies the relevant transaction fee.

7. Is there MDR on UPI payments below ₹2,000?

Under the announced framework, eligible merchant payments up to ₹2,000 remain free of MDR. Confirm the live implementation status before relying on the revised charges.

8. Can a merchant add UPI MDR to the customer’s bill?

The Ministry of Finance states that MDR is not a customer charge, and banks have been advised to ensure that merchants do not pass it on to customers.

9. Do I need the WhatsApp Business API to accept payments?

Not for payment links. You generally need the WhatsApp Business Platform for an order and checkout flow built directly into an automated chat experience.

10. How should businesses reconcile WhatsApp payments?

Use a unique order reference and match it with the gateway order ID, payment ID, webhook status, settlement report and bank credit. Do not rely only on screenshots or chat confirmations.

11. Can businesses accept international currencies through WhatsApp checkout in India?

WhatsApp’s India payment flows are designed for INR. A business that needs international collections should use a separately supported cross-border payment flow rather than assume the domestic WhatsApp checkout supports foreign currencies.
